Grounding has long been a contentious issue. However, as digital high frequency devices proliferate, the difficulties become increasingly complex. Grounding refers to being connected to the earth or to a conducting body that operates in lieu of the earth. Grounding is also referred to as earthing in several international standards. Bonding is the joining of metal pieces to create electrical continuity.
Grounding is used for fire protection, electrical shock protection, electrical system ground fault prevention, lighting protection-building and electrical system, electrical noise and EMI protection, and voltage stabilization.
The goal of power grounding is to reduce the damage caused by a wire or equipment ground fault. Ground fault currents pass through cable tray systems. Where there are gaps in the cable tray system, bolting, connections, splice plates, clamps, and bonding jumpers are used to connect the cable tray system. Steel shielding is effective at frequencies up to around 100 kilohertz, but at higher frequencies, in the megahertz region, aluminum or copper shielding is more effective.
